The condenser runs non-stop even after the thermostat reaches desired temperature, and shuts off the fan. At that point I have to shut the system off at the breaker.

Any ideas how I might be able to get the condenser to work in sync with the thermostat?

You should know that this wasn't a problem until I had to have my brainbox replaced due to rain water shorting the old box.

After the fledgling hvac graduate replaced the brainbox, this issue occured. He doesn't readily know why this is happening and it's like pulling teeth to get this guy to come back. So if I can fix it, I will try.

not to be a mother hen here, you know if you touch the capacitor w/o shorting it, you will get badly badly shocked. check the contactor. its the rectangular piece that the load wires run into. there should be a little copper button in the middle to manually push(WITH AN INSULTED SCREWDRIVER) . with your pin pulled on your outside disconnect, push the contactor button to see if its not stuck. does the condensor start automatically after you put power back to ther unit?

make sure the 2 wire to your furnace or air handler is on yellow(cooling) and common.

Brainbox? Not a term we use in America.

The outside unit is controlled by a signal from your wall thermostat. It closes a relay on the outside unit called a "contactor". This contactor turns on the outside unit and keeps it running until the wall thermostat inside is satisfied.

If the unit keeps running on, the problem must lie with the contactor or the inside thermostat. An A/C technician should be consulted to repair this, as it may involve high voltage repair.

I'm having the same problem and suspected that it may be a relay problem. If I turn the unit off at the breaker the compressor won't start until the thermostat tells it to; then it won't turn off until I turn off the breaker. Thanks to you guys I now know to take the panels off the unit to check for the relay.

Outside in the unit is a relay, that is used as a motor starter. Sometimes the contacts will weld and stay pulled in. This will cause the motor to run forever and not shut off.

Turn off the compressor at the disonnect switch and then tear into the outside compressor, find the relay, and inspect the relay contacts. You can use a file to clean them up and get a little more use out of them, but I would get another set of contacts or a new relay. Good luck
