In my experience, if your engine has a bad earth it will try to earth through the choke cable (if it has one, or the throttle cable), these will get very hot and could melt if the problem is bad enough.
Usually this is caused by the earth strap either being frayed or broken, this earth strap is a thick cable attached from the engine or gearbox to the battery earth or the chassis, it is there to earth the engine.
Check this earth strap and replace it if it is frayed.

how could that earth get in your car's engine?
is your car an old model?
well...to know...
just try to open it if you have some background with engines..
or try using a pressure air...and point it in your engine.
if something flies like some kinda dust...well its positive that there is an earth in your engine..
or best...
have it check with your car's manufacturer...

For some of you that tried to answer this question (earth ) was a old term used for the negetive side of a battery, it is still used in aircraft, so some of your comments look abit daft

Your question is not clear, are you asking about a ground in the car's electrical system?
Earth is just dirt. You may want to reask your question.

take a test lamp and hook it to something that is metal. they touch the other end to the positive battery post. If you are looking for more then one you can use an ohm meter and touch it to to metal parts and if it reads .3ohms or less you have found to grounds
