Yes apparently it is true. Its to do with the smell given off by conkers or something like that which they really cannot tolerate. You should put down a conker in any nook and cranny where a spider is likely to emerge from. I find that conkers start going a bit icky and sticky after a while so best to renew them now and again.
You can also get a spray if you can't find any conkers.

I have heard that if you have horse chsetnuts in your house you won't get spiders. haven't tried it personally but been told it works
