This can be for a number of reasons;

Is there gravel/stones in the bottom that weren't thouroughly cleaned? If washing the gravel doesn't solve the problem, the next most likely cause is a high level of dissolved constituents such as phosphates, silicates, or heavy metals. If you test the water, you'll no doubt find the pH is high (alkaline).

In these cases, treating the water with conditioners will often resolve the problem.

Often cloudy water doesn't appear the instant an aquarium is set up. Instead it appears days, weeks, or even months later. In these cases the cause is usually due to bacterial bloom. As the new aquarium goes through the initial break in cycle, it is not unusual for the water to become cloudy, or at least a little hazy. It will take several weeks to several months to establish bacterial colonies that are able to clear wastes from the water. Over time that cloudiness will resolve itself.

Decaying plants or excess food that remains uneaten, can also cause the milky water seen in bacterial bloom. Regardless of the cause, don't panic over bacterial blooms. Keeping the aquarium very clean by removing debris such as decaying plants and uneaten food, vacuuming the gravel regularly, and performing partial water changes, will quickly resolve most cases of bacterial bloom.

Cut back feeding to every second or third day (the fish not you), which will cut down on excess food decay. If there are particles of debris in the water that you are unable to remove via water changes and vacuuming, a flocculent may be used to clear them away. Flocculents cause particles of debris to clump together so they can easily be removed by the filter (be sure to clean your filter so it's working at peak efficiency).

Hope this helps.

It sounds as if your tank is cycling. It's normal, and your water will continue to be cloudy for a few weeks while the bacteria in the tank (ones that will convert the toxic ammonia and nitrite from your fish wastes into the relatively nontoxic nitrate) reproduce. Don't try to remove everything from the tank and clean it - you'll only make the process (and cloudy water) last longer. Here are a few links that will explain what's going on with you tank (they've got plenty of other useful info as well):

Did you wash all the things you put inside the tank? Like the rocks,, sometimes they have a residue on them that will do that.. Or,,, you might want to double check your filter and the chem levels.
Best of luck,
Lori

Thats because your tank hasn't completed it's cycling process. The cloudy water is due to a bacterial bloom. Search the web for cycling of a new tank and nitrogen cycle.

did you use pebbles? and if you did, was it rinsed before you put in the water? it could be dirt from the pebbles... or, it could also be the water... what water did you use? if it came from the faucet, it could be chlorine... anyways... hope this helped...
