Nanotechnology is the making of structures at below the microscopic level, which is where optical microscopes can look. Structures may be created by etching away solid material or building up with added atoms and molecules. The ultimate in fineness is moving atoms to spell words, or make grids to trap other molecules. Slightly above this fineness is making structures, such a Buckyballs, to carry medicine through harsh environments like the stomach to be dissolved where needed or released on a timed basis. A goal now being achieved is making structures which act as tiny machines to move, drawing power from radio waves, and clean veins and arteries or nanofilters.

Nanotechnology refers to microscopic machinery. Others have postulated uses for such technology, but the science remains quite theoretical yet. There are minor triumps, but no big breakthrough or important practical usage.

With one major exception. In science fiction, such technology is used as a plot device. Many a writer has used nanotechnology in their stories. I am sure they are quite grateful as it helps pay the mortgage.
