Flattery gets boring when it's non-specific and constant. For instance, my bosses at work always thank me and tell me what a good job I'm doing for doing my job. But yesterday a man who never compliments me and is visibly annoyed when I screw up actually told me how helpful I was after I went out of my way to do something for him. To be complimented by him that one time was better than all the little compliments I get from my managers on a regular basis.
