myself and my girlfriend are heading back to vegas this june and have reservations at the mgm grand in a newly renovated "west wing" room. I know these rooms are very nice(friend stayed there last mnth) but i'd like to know if its posible to get a suite or special type room with a jacuzzi perhaps by generating a tip at the front desk, thanks.

We are going to be staying at the MGM Grand in July so I have done exhaustive research on this subject. My understanding after reading literally hours of trip reports and such is that MGM Grand is just about the only hotel that the $20 trick won't work in becuase they are bonusing check in employees on the number of upgrades they sell at check in.

The will upgrade (or even move you to a different hotel) if they are over-booked, but that is about the only way that you are going to get a free/extremly cheap upgrade.

They have a program where you can pay for an upgrade fee at check in. (When I asked about the suite upgrade fee I was told it was $80 per night) If you are interested in the rate I would call thier reservation department.

I've gotten upgrades just by asking. You will have a hard time with this on a weekend. A monday arrival will almost guarantee it. I noted that the Mirage charged more from rooms with a view of the volcano. I booked the cheapest room and just asked if they had a volcano view available by any chance. Always be very nice (but not brown-nosy). Accept what they say and know that you tried. Tips are always a good idea in vegas. You will get better treatment and this is what tips are meant to be. This is the true tipping capital of the world. You get what you tip for....

In my experience the key is to lead with the tip - give it to them as you hand over your credit card and before they have actually started the process of assigning you a room.

The next thing is to be clear about what you want. Even if you can't get an upgraded room there are always better rooms. What do you want? A nicer view? A lower floor? A shorter walk to the elevator? Be sure to make it clear - otherwise the clerk will be guessing about what it is that you want.

Probably not. The front desk staff generally doesn't assign the rooms - it's done by computer.

This is what I've done and it's worked both times I tried it (at Luxor and the Mirage) - call the hotel directly and ask for the name of the front desk manager and their fax number. Fax this person a little note stating it's a special occasion and ask if they could do anything to make the trip more special or more memorable, you'd REALLY appreciate it. If they can, they do.

Remember this - if they're "new", they're probably pretty full, so you'd be wise not to count on it.

As a front desk person, you can try and tip but we can only do so much. There might not be a room open that you want.

Just ask for an up grade and if one is open then they should put you in it.

Good Luck.
