I have installed the Genie Back-up software on my laptop and I intend to back-up to DVD-RW and possibly online. I use Windows XP as an operating system. I have the following clarifications:

1. Generally, apart from data files what should I back-up.

2. Which are the affordable online back-up sites. Genie does offer that service but I found that quite expensive.

The only things that you would normally need to back up are things that you create and things that are difficult (or time consuming) to get again.

You should decide where you are going to keep all of your important data files (most people use "My Documents") and then back up that entire folder - that is what I do. Every time that I download something that I would need to install again, I store it in a "Download" folder under "My Documents".

The only exceptions that I know of are the other folders under your user account - like "Desktop" and "Favorites" - those are nice to save also.

I don't know about on-line backup sites - I prefer to keep my information on an external USB hard drive that I lock in a safe when I'm not using it.
