Will the bond still exist years after breastfeeding?

Breast feeding is very healthy for a baby. The hormones released during breastfeeding strengthen the mother's nurturing feelings towards the child. Strengthening the maternal bond is very important as up to 80% of mothers suffer from some form of postnatal depression.

There are many things that strengthen a bond between mother and child. Love, discipline, guidance, etc will keep a bond strong.

A very wise quote I once read: Three things a child needs are love, food and warmth. All of which can be easily provided from mom while breastfeeding. Even if you go skin to skin contact with a child while bottlefeeding, your body does not heat up. However, while breastfeeding, your body's temperature does rise because it is doing more work by feeding the child and naturally warming the child up (even if you are clothed). Not to mention you are aware that it is you and your body providing the nourishment for your child. Something no one else can do in the same way! Some women don't bond very close with their child while breastfeeding, but in most cases they do. Either way, of two women I know that didn't breastfeed long and bonded after stopping, they both wish they continued breastfeeding longer! That bond lasts forever, whether that child as a teenager wants to admit it or not! My mother breastfed me the longest out of her four kids and I can't not bother with her no matter how much she pisses me off! And this question is much better than your previous.

Its the skin to skin contact. Some believe that this is part of the reason children are often more attached to their mothers' than their fathers'.

You can still have that closeness with a bottle fed baby, it just won't be as much of a CONSTANT routine.

There is a chemical bond too.

Either way, some babies are harder to bond with and some are cuddle bugs.

Why not try it see how it goes for you?

Yes, the bond usually last through out life.

Just a note about the response above. YOU are more closely bonded to baby when you breastfeed. A note about your body warming up, it has been documented that mother's of twins, when both babies are laid skin to skin on mom's chest/belly that her body will regulate the babies temperature separately. One side of her body can heat up and the other cool down... The body does this more frequently and more efficiently in breastfeeding mothers.

I was unable physically, to breastfeed. I have an intense bond with all 4 of my children, two who are now adults. It isn't the breast that creates the bond. It's the touching, kissing, closeness and love with the baby, that creates the bond. The bond is really security and if baby feels secure and safe, you're on the right road to a wonderful relationship!

"Breastfeeding my son made me feel less like a woman and more like a cow; that assault on my self-identity interfered with my bonding with him. I actually felt more of a bond once I switched to bottle-feeding."

That is tragic. That's all I can say... You will never know the bond until you do it. There are so many little things that happen while you are going it, that your love and the bonding just grow more and more...Sometimes, it's not easy, or convenient, but it's for such a short time, and you can never get that time back...It's awesome!

Humans (in fact, all animals) need touch to live. Touching has serious medical benefits. The skin to skin contact during breastfeeding helps your baby grow and develop and babies are designed to get information, neurological stimulation, comfort and social connection through touch. The hormones released during nursing help mom feel relaxed and make her feel happy and loving. This helps her respond better to her baby and helps her baby feel cared for and loved. The fact that your baby relies on you for everything can be a big responsibility, but knowing that you make the very best food for your baby helps that responsibility feel like a privilege and not so hard. The bond exists for the rest of the baby's life. The baby learns trust, respect, love and comfort before he/she is even able to see well.

Breastfeeding provides physical contact, warmth and closeness, which help to create a special bond between a mother and her baby. I breastfeed my 2 and a half month old baby and I love it because its just a special bond between me and her.

I don't know if it's breastfeeding that creates the bond, or simply nurturing your baby. Breastfeeding my son made me feel less like a woman and more like a cow; that assault on my self-identity interfered with my bonding with him. I actually felt more of a bond once I switched to bottle-feeding.

I don't think it matters either way. The bond is there regardless of whether you breastfeed or not... and it will exist for as long as you are a mother, but it will evolve and change with time.
