Most if not all of science is double-edged like a knife. It can be used for good and for bad purposes too and which side is used depends on the other aspects of the scientists and the other members of the society.

Fire is one of the first discoveries of man and we cannot imagine the present civilisations without fire. But fire has been misused too (arson).

Oil played a major role in the last couple of centuries in human progress but the wars and the pollution associated with oil?

Nuclear energy is very useful as a good alternative source of energy esp. when global warming is becoming a concern, but what about the nuclear weapons?

Genetics is one field promising to develop cures for many diesease inherited but what about genetic manipulation and creation of bacteria and virus which are resistant to present day antibiotics and can cause havoc?

There are many more examples. In fact, it is difficult to think of science which is totally benign.

No, science isn't harmful. People who use the results of science in bad ways are harmful.

Well, it's helpful for obvious reasons. It's harmful because as technology continues to grow, our planet continues to suffer. Sure, we're coming up with ways to do less harm, but when all is said and done nothing is sacred.

If you want some thing new, you are expected to sacrifice another. For example.

Refrigerators / Air conditioners - Global warming.

Automobiles - Pollution.

Cell phone - cause cancer. etc., The list is long.
