I see there are no real answers here so I'll try my best.

Colin Powell was initially reluctant to go to war in Iraq. Then somebody gave him "definite proof," and he presented the "proof" in front of the entire United Nations. When they turned out to be false, he was humiliated. He was a person that shied away from controversy and disliked the limelight. So he just refused to come back for Bush's 2nd term.

on an identical time as i do no longer have faith Obama could have any Republicans or Bush linked cupboard individuals, the rationalization for the %. is obvious. Obama needs to make a secure transition on the grounds that we are formally "at conflict" so retaining the Secretary of protection on until eventually capability has been transferred makes desirable experience. Neocons won't be able to blame Obama if something happens early interior the Obama presidency by fact he maintained the status quo initially. And who's the fool who thinks Paul Volcker grow to be a Reagan appointee? Jimmy Carter placed him interior the Fed and Volcker is a Democrat. Geez!

Appeared to me that he was well aware of the lie the administration was trying to sell about the war and he finally decided he wanted nothing more to do with it. I think after Bush is out of office we may find out more details from Powell.

Bush always fires the ones he is afraid of.... and the ones who have the right answers... and the ones who oppose him... Can't you see Mr. Bush only surrounds himself with "yes" men??? (and women, for that matter)...

Colin Powell didn't abandon anyone - he was fired because he wouldn't play their game, he was way too smart for them (one of the few good Republicans).

Well, "Walkin' Dude", it's because they had him go up in front of the UN General Assembly and say a bunch of things that turned out to be mistaken and/or fabricated; and had him make a fool of himself, waving around a little bottle of Ajax as if it were anthrax.

Political positioning, and he is a very smart man. Don't be surprised if you see him run for a future election, maybe '12.
