I’ve seen people feeling terribly jealous and I've also seen people who have victim of terrible jealousy so I often wonder what causes some people to feel so jealous - it's such a negative emotion? Is it that when they see someone being better than them or doing well in life, it just reminds them of their own inadequacy and limitations and that somehow make them feel absolutely incompetent like a failure for some reason intellectually or otherwise? And if this is not the reason then what could be the reason for some feeling so negative? Please share your opinion on this.

Great answers all - thanks

But hey guys, I'm talking here jealousy in general & not just in a romantic relationship. So please try not to justify it in context of romance.

The Sarcastic Answer: They didn't get hugged enough as a child.

Real Answer: They feel threatened that someone did something better than them that shouldn't deserve it. You're right it is such a negitave feeling, it can lead to all kinds of other negitive things: Anger and Hate for example. And over reactions thinking they need to top someone at something else. If you let jealousy get out of control (besides the slight "envy" that you may feel) it can be very, very harmful to yourself and others.

If both people in a relationship were totally honest and respected each other and if both were good enough people to not give the other person any reason to feel jealousy in the first place , we would not have so much of it. Jealousy is a feeling of not knowing what your mate is up to cause they are acting differently or suspiciously . The lack of honest open communication with each other will cause feelings of jealousy sometimes. So basically if both will be open , honest and show the other how they feel about each other, it makes things a whole lot smoother. A little jealousy is kinda normal to an small amount but ,if you don't have a little jealousy say for instance when your mate notices another and you don't feal a little jealous, I think you really don't care about them cause you are not worried about losing them to another. I actually kind of like for my mate to be a little jealous from time to time ,it another way to show that she cares and that I am hers.

Well, imagine you had earned a lot that was rightfully yours. Someone steals what you earned and worked for, and you are left with nothing. You now have to watch this person living off what should be yours. That is the essence of the feeling. It can be delusional. It could be just wishful thinking and grandiosity. But it's not an entirely foreign or absurd feeling in some cases. I'm trying to say that like other negative feelings, such as hate, it has its place.

It's a fearful insecurity. If a person feels secure about himself and the world around him, there's no need for it. A jealous person tries to hold on to a person because the individual is insecure without that person.

When someone is good at something but that person knows that other people are so much better than him, it hardly seems to matter. So that jealous person tends to push away anyone that overshadows him. It's like ugly girls avoiding pretty girls and vice versa.

Sure you could switch to being an adoring fan of someone better than you, but the minute you find out that star doesn't want to be friends with you, you're jealous again.

Jealousy is such a bad thing. I hate it but it is something I can't control. I am a very jealous person. I hate that about me. I think the older you get the better it gets. Yes, it can make people crazy. It makes me want to better myself so I don't think I am maybe jealous so much maybe envious and that makes me want to have more things like others. Who knows, but jealousy sucks!!!

I think jealousy can stem from low self-esteem. I'll be honest and say that there have been times that I have felt jealous, and it was because I felt inadequate.

Some people are jealous of material things, and others are jealous of looks. I do think that it is part of human nature to feel jealous. Maybe it is a way for human beings to strive to set goals to boost their self-esteem, and status in life.

Jealously can also lead to disaster. I guess it depends on each person, and how they deal with life's experiences.

Insecurity. Some people become obsessed with someone that they will do anything to get to that person. But a lot of times, it will backfire.

Jealousy is a feeling.... Something that people SHOULD be in control of by not allowing their feelings to go to far. n

you answer you own question, people are jealous for many reason, the answer is all the above, envy, greed, hate, love, hurt , pain, lack of self confidence, they tend to see what they want, but not what it takes to get it. they see what others have and want it, not looking at how hard the other worked to get it, they cant see there nose despite there face, life is a complicated mess and people tend to make it that much more complicated , i would say a majority is greed, they want her , that item what ever , i dont know if i make any sence, but it's my thought
