The human tail bone (coccyx) is a vestigial organ, ie an organ left over during evolution. It is not used for any other purpose in humans other than to support the pelvic and gluteal (butt) muscles). It also contains the end of the nerves and protect it. It is the end of the vertebral column and serves the same function as the rest of the vertebral column.

So you can wag it and attract mates.

Humans begin with a tail which is absorbed during foetal development. They are left with a vestigial tail at the bottom of their spine. It is called the Coccyx. It has no practical use apart from the above.

If humans had tails, the uses would depend on the actual abilities of the tails.

Perhaps it could be prehensile like that of other monkeys. We could use it as an extra limb for a variety of things - climbing, eating, making rude gestures... locomotion, social signals, weapon - cool to have a scorpion tail!

Perhaps it could be less functional and perhaps used as an additional sensory organ (check out what you're sitting on ... ewww! squishy!)

Maybe we could make it drop off and wriggle around in the presence of a predator so we can make good our escape while our adversaries die laughing. (Even better if it could sense a squishy predator and fire SCORPION VENOM into it!)

Perhaps it would be only decorative.

It would cause a major fashion revolution!

The human tail bone is just an example of a vestigial structure.. the human tail bone is not needed, it's just "left over" from the human race better adapting it's environment.

Balance. Lots of animals use their tails for balance. Not only that tails can assist in matting, hanging, killing, and defending...etc.

Hope this Helps!

If I had a tail I would use it to scratch that place on my back that I can't reach.

No use, hence it vanished during evolution.

It has no use. It is a leftover from our ape ancestors.
