I have teenage neices who spend lots of money on their looks..such as professional haircuts, haircolor, waxing, eyebrow shaping, facials, acrylic nails, etc. Is this typical for most teens and women? I never had these luxuries as a teen and still don't have most. Am I not normal?

it depends on the girl.

i can spend nothing at all a month, i can spend $200 in a month. depends.

young teens, or ppl aged 13 - 19 usually spend ALOT more, coz they havent yet discovered what they do and dont need/want yet.

for example, i used to spend HEAPS all the time on everything beauty. acryllic nails, pro hairdressing, new clothes every week, spray tan, eyelash tinting once a month,

through this wasteful and expensive process, i discovered what i do and dont want. what i feel neccessary and what i dont. i ditched the acrylics, coz i bite em off anyway, now i just clear polish my own, as im not that interested in perfect nails, yet my mum, her greatest pet hate is average nails, so its her big thing. I ditched the spray tan, as i looked orange and stupid, now i accept that i am a porcelain doll, and just use good moisturisers, but my best mate, looks AMAZING with a spray tan, and if she gets her regular spraytan, she doesnt need any makeup at all except lipgloss and mascara, so its cheaper to get the spraytan rather than invest in all sorts of other products. I cut my own hair as i know my curls better than any hairdresser, but i get the salon to colour my hair, as i dont like the way home kits turn out. one of my other friends are totally opposite, her hair is short and styled great, and she cant do that on her own, so she pays for cuts, but she just has to once in a while put one black home colour thru her hair to keep it nice and dark, and doesnt need a hairdresser for that.

so thru this expensive ridiculous phase the teens go thru, the best things parents and family can do, is discuss with the girls (or boys) what looks great, what they dont really look much better after doing, etc. so that they can narrow down what they should and shouldnt spend money on.

it takes time.... coz right now, they think they need everything that Jessica Alba, or Gwyn Stefani, or Christina Aguilera, or some emo band has. they will learn. the hard way. lol

how old are you? chances are, since you were a teen, things have changed. these days, the media unfortunately rots teens brains into thinking this is a neccesary process, and that wants of the world are actually strict NEEDS. parents have a big part to play in keeping it under control. if they dont, its there own fault when they are dishing out the dollars for hair extensions and a $500 seasonal wardrobe. lol

you are normal. it depends on the induvidual, and the parents teaching them different to what the world teaches. oh, and a family budget.

your normal...It is a new trend and parents today are far to indulging when it comes to their children...I am guilty of this to.( I have boys...electronics of all kinds..motorcycles..etc ).. I do try not to go overboard or let these items become expected ,like... this just came out...so I must have it type thing,...they usually get these things... when they have done something good ,worked for them ,or both...to just give them these things .....I think could somewhere down the line backfire on them ...what if they can't afford what they have become accustomed to being given when they are out on their own..how will this effect them...I am thinking possibly in a negative way....... I hope for your nieces sake they do well in school and end up with a career that will support this kind of life style ..or they marry well....otherwise, this might lead to dissatisfaction with their life...which would be awful.....

And no,I never had the luxuries your nieces have either....but I can't say I would have turn down an offer like this if it had been made.. : )

You're perfectly normal, so don't sweat it!

On average, I spend around $20 a month on beauty care stuff, namely foundation (around $7) and a haircut/wash ($16). I don't stock up on makeup unless I run out nor do I do anything fancy with my hair; I just comb it and spray it with hairspray! The only thing I do once a week is polish my nails; but I don't wear fake nails or go to a nail salon.

I think women have a greater pressure to keep up a certain image nowadays. But it's so superficial, not to mention a good way to break the bank.

Women and girls - we don't need to spend $$$ just to prove we're special. Just be yourself and take care of your body without getting extreme - it's the only one you've got!

Cheers!! :)

I have teenage nieces too who are obsessed with looks. It's a generation thing! But what I can appreciate is that they don't really need to spend a lot of money. Facials? Forget about it!!! They have naturally rejuvanative skin! if anything they are damaging natures course!
Nails are a common thing, I stopped wearing acrylics and started drinking more water and using this calcium treatment by Revlon. It saves me SOOOOO much money and my nails loo like nice French Manicured acrylics! and so does my younger niece! ( the older one I can't convince).
Bottom line, SELF ESTEEM, if it ain't there, BUY IT! thats what society teaches them.

I think it is pretty typical for teens now days, most of them who spend tons of money on their looks don't have bills and other things like that to worry about and fashion is one of the main things they are into so that's where all of their money goes. Alot of them want to look and live just like the celebrities they see on tv and in magazines. Personally I never spent much on my looks as a teenager mainly because I was more into other hobbies and that's what my money went into instead.
Now I do find myself spending more on my looks than I use to but still not tons. You really don't have to spend a lot of money each month to look really nice.

Unfortunately it is the trend now to spend lots on your looks when you are young. TV and magazines encourage young girls to do so. Like you I never had these luxuries when I was younger, and people always comment on how my skin and general appearance looks great. I put it down to having just used basic hygiene methods when I was younger, because like you we didnt have the pressure of advertising to compete with.
