Rats are easy and don't need tons of space. They will also form a bond with you. Some people think they are gross, diseased, and dirty, and although that is very true with wild rats like sewer rats and farm rats, tame pet rats are clean and cute. They also do not require much maintenance since they will just hang out in the cage.

I vote you get a hamster. They are great! I just picked up 2 from Petsmart last night. They were only 10 bucks each. I got 4lb of food for 5 bucks. Instead of buying a small 10 gallon fish tank to house them in I bought a large clear rubbermaid storage box with a snapping lid. I cost about 10 bucks at Walmart, then I drilled some small air holes around the sides and tops for fresh air. Then all you really need is some bedding for it. So upfront out of pocket you may be looking at about 30 bucks for one hamster. Then maybe 5 or 10 bucks every few months. They are cheap and fun to play with.

Cheap and big are mutually exclusive, one or the other pretty much. However, you could handle 2 goldfish in your tank. They get big and are reasonably priced. The rule of thumb for these guys is 20 gallons for one and 10 gallons for each additional goldie. Fancy guppies are a ton of fun, and the breed like crazy! Cheap, but small, about 1-2 inches depending on ages. You could also look into cichlids, they cost but get about the length you are looking for. They're beautiful, interactive fish, more often than not following people around the tank rather than hiding! And always ready and willing to eat. I'd look into the african variety, they tend to stay smaller than the south american variety. But research the types you are interested in before mixing. They can be very aggressive and territorial if handled improperly. Best of Luck!

Hermit crabs!! They are so fun, and very easy to take care of, especially if you live by a beach. The bottom of their habitat can be just sand, so filling it up with beach sand is free and easy. Refreshing only needs to be done about once a month. Also, hermits eat just about anything (if you don't want to spend the little extra money for actual hermit crab food). Cereal, and crackers are their favorites.

Hermits are real fun to hang out with, they just kinda crawl around (you MUST keep an eye on them though when they are out of their habitat, or they will get away!). They love to get baths. I also just filled my bathroom sink up a little, and they love to play in the water (always be careful not to accidentally drown them! Just use a little water.)

Then when it is time for them to grow up, you just buy a bigger seashell! It's always fun to wake up the next day after you put the new shell in there and see that they have moved into it!

The other answerer's who suggested Hermit Crabs are correct. Crabs are one of the least inexpensive pets because a person rarely has to go to the pet shop and buy anything for them except: occasionally, shells and food. You can even supply a lot of what they eat from the home kitchen because crabs are scavengers and they eat about 60 different items.

I have never been a fan of caged birds, but since i found a little blue Budgie and put him in a cage with some bird seed, He has been an endless source of ammusement, with his chirping and accrobatics. I have since found out from the internet, that they are easy to mate and care for, I will try to find a mate for him.

zebra finches. Very active so fun to watch. They even raised a few babies. Put some warm water in and they take a bath. I use to let mine fly around in the house.(I pulled down the shades so they did not fly into windows). They would start climbing on the door so that is how I knew they wanted to fly. Sing alot in the morning so you might not like this

Why don't you try getting a bigger tank for your fish you have already. New "landscaping" and a new look could rejuvinate your existing enjoyement of your fish. There really aren't any other "easy" animals. Possibly a small lizard tank or marine frogs?

A guinea pig!
I have 3 boys right now. They have so much personality, and they are relatively simple to care for too.
They do the funniest things...I've never had one that didn't "yell" when it's time for dinner. They're very cool little critters :)
Let us know what you decide!
