It bothers me a little when I see people, mainly white people who have the confederate flag up as if the world would have been better if there was segregation. I don't know why the confederate flag is banned and I think people should protest against it.

I only see the confederate flag mainly in the south. Rarely do I see it here in California.

No. Its silly to ban a thing like a flag.

I think its good that the bigot racist intolerant haters identify and proudly proclaim themselves by having a banner to display.

I wish more of them had brought their flags when they showed up supporting Bush and the GOP at their campaign rallies.

The Confederate flag, just like the swastika, is only a symbol. The real problem is the reason and beliefs behind the person rallying around that symbol. If the person that has the confederate flag up is an ignorant racist, then the true problem isn't the flag, is it? When I see a racist person with a confederate flag, I remember that there's not a single person alive today that was alive during the Civil War. Banning a symbol is not a solution, especially in America where so many fought and died to give you the freedoms you enjoy.

No it is not. The Confederate flag cannot be limited to racism. The Confederate flag stands for rebellion. It stands for the fact that although united by language and a common homeland, we are diverse. Not every state is the same as the other thus the confederate spirit lives on. The Confederacy was about the states rights. ( Follow along with me on this. I don't believe owning people was ever right and I'm not standing up for that cause!) Just because you wave the rebel flag does not mean you are racist. The flag represents the states ability to make there own decisions without federal intervention. For this reason it should not be banned!

No, I don't think it should be banned, your free to express your opinions in America....at least for now that is. Some view the Confederate flag as racist, others choose the Nazi flag, and if America follows on it's current path, we could very well take 'Ol Glory with us. I say let the people hang their confederate flag, because most people do see it as a hate symbol. It tells you a lot about the person who's hanging it. You can look at it as a 'warning' of sorts. It's nothing but symbolism, and expression of a persons soul....you can take it as you will. Even the dreaded Swastika has origins long before the Nazi's, it's all how you choose to look at it.

First of all, the Civil War was not about slavery or segregation.

If it was about slavery, then explain why Union states like New York would not have joined the Confederacy, given that several points of entry for imported slaves were in New England.

Consider also that the vast majority of people in the South did not own slaves. Do you really think it likely that they were joining to fight for someone else's right to own a slave, something they themselves could not afford? Do you really think the people of the North were so noble as to fight for the freedom of the slaves, given that most Northerners didn't consider blacks human either? Also ask yourself why Lincoln didn't even make the slaves a subject of his speeches until after the Battle of Gettysburg, in 1863, halfway through the war. Also, consider that Dredd Scott was decided two years before the war, and there simply weren't any serious threats to Slavery on the horizon. The South didn't need to secede to continue Slavery. Slavery was decided by the war, but it wasn't an issue that caused it.

The war was about state sovereignty. That's what the flag represents, sovereignty, independence, and freedom.

Which of those do you want to protest?

I think the confederate battle flag is whatever you want it to be. If I was black, it would probably bother me a little to see white people flying it in my face, but its also a source of pride for southerners to say that is where they are from and don't think about it in oppressive ways. I am from Georgia, and it doesn't offend me however I am glad its not on our flag anymore. I would rather do things to bring people together than to piss people off. As long as its left on the top of the General Lee....Im cool.

Because Southerners view it as a symbol of southern pride, and standing up for your rights. They don't associate it with slavery. Also, it isn't the confederate flag, it is the battle flag of the confederate army.
The Swastika is actually a Hindu religous symbol that was used by the Nazis. that is the thing about symbols, they mean different things to different people

of direction the accomplice Flag should not be banned. different than for the obtrusive first modification implications, no one has in no way discovered from an adventure that has been denied. we ought to undergo in suggestions all of our history, the greatness and the imperfections if we ought to proceed to advance. And, to the ignorant person who stated that the Democrats have been the social gathering that supported slavery returned then: political events evolve (very similar to animals do in case you have self belief in evolution). there's a reason the Democratic social gathering lost the South whilst the Civil Rights Act became into signed. That became into 1964, no longer 1864.

No it is not, it is part of my history, my relative died in the War of Northern Aggression.
Way can't whites have symbols of their heritage when blacks demand and gets theirs.
Some people could say the American flag is racist by the why the government control blacks (Make them Slaves to welfare)in the form of welfare programs. Welfare just cause people to stay poor and keeps there children poor by not giving them proper training or self respect.
