At first I thought they were water spots on the glass until I saw them sway with the current in the water. It's white and slimy and I'm afraid it could be a fungus of some sort. I've been treating the tank with Melafix every day for prevention from adding new fish plus I have about 4 - 5 tablespoons of aquarium salt. I shouldn't have fungus growing. I am about to do a water change since I've had a spike in nitrites. I thought also it could possibly be the start of algae growth..but I haven't cycled my tank yet so I don't think that's it either. My fish don't seem stressed and nothing is growing on them.

It's still possible that it's a fungus, but doubtful. If it were algae starting to grow it would at least have a green cast of coloration. Take a very close look at the stuff and see if it might look like this:

If so you have a hydra infestation. Fluke medication will kill them in a day or so.

If that's not what you are seeing, feel free to email me with more details about how it looks or even a picture if you can get one.

Take a very close look at these spots and see if they are moving like tiny individual worms. If so you might have a simple case of planaria, which is a type of flatworm.

If so they are completely harmless to your fish. They thrive in less then ideal aquarium conditions, especially in an overfed tank. Make sure, if this is the case, that you don't feed the fish more then they eat and that you vacuum regularly and do your weekly water changes and the problem will adjust itself.

Do you have a snail in your aquarium, mine started laying eggs and it had slimy sacs with white dots in it. Otherwise continue on with water change and maybe get an aquarium side cleaner (scrapper) to clean the glass on the inside so that when you change the water you can have the sides of the glass too. I am not good with aquariums so you may have to specify fresh or salt water and the types of fish to get a better answer. Good Luck:)
