My mom's fish tank is making a ton of noise and she's away on vacation.. It has stopped blowing bubbles out the tube and its making a very loud noise... so i took the top off and realized the little motor thing isn't in there secure and its flying all over the place.. i tried getting it to stay still but it doesnt...

I know nothing about fish tanks but I dont want the fish to die.. Anyone have a clue how I can get this thing to start blowing bubbles again?

Odds are good it's just a lose piece or possibly a small part called the impeller that's broken. I suggest unplugging it, pour the water from the filter and also some from the tank in a bowl, put the floss or sponge part in the bowl and take the filter to a nearby aquarium store. They will be able to identify what if anything is broken and if they have the correct part. Once fixed replace it on the tank, add the wet stuff back and fill it with water before plugging it in.

If it can't be fixed and you need to replace it, try to buy the same brand and put the wet stuff in the new filter. This is important as it will save fish due to the beneficial bacteria that lives on that material in the filter.

Well, unplug the thing and empty out the water and hopefully you won't spill the charcoal and filter fiber all over the place. If you don't have clean stuff to replace what's in there, just try to keep it from getting any soap or such on it when you are near the sink or basis. The impeller, the thingy that whirls around and around and spins the water and what not isn't fastened together quite right. So draw a little picture of how the thing is set up before you start pulling things apart and then try to get the impeller places right into that little cavity and make sure there aren't any charcoal pieces wedged in there. Not very clear, I know. Thanks for caring about your Mom's fish. If it doesn't fit one way, flip it over and try it the other way. Just fiddle with it--you can do it. If it's not too late, call Pet Smart or the aquarium store for help.

There are about 20 different kinds of filters. Try to do a Google search for yours and see if you get a diagram of yours. Take it apart, just the pieces that snap together don't unscrew any thing this may break any water seals. Clean out all the plumbing and if there is a little fan like part with a magnet make sure ther'e no algae on that. My sons is like that and the algae build up stops the water flow and the pump starts to shake and vibrate. Again with the many different models just use sense in taking it apart and cleaning it.

yes just buy a new one its not worth the bother trying to repair that one it has gone to "filter heaven" also a new one is better because the old one could have been, very inefficient for A LONG TIME< you might just loose 1 or 3 anyway better get a new filter A>S>A>P>
