We will be spending about 2.5 days in Munich during July. Planning on going to Dachau and the Neuschwanstein Castle.

Munich is a WONDERFUL city. You will LOVE it. Plus, it's the safest city in Germany. The punishments there are twice as steep as they are anywhere else in Germany. I was told this by a cab driver in the city, and to be honest, I FELT safe there. The people were very nice and helpful.
There's a nice Croatian restaurant up on Dachauerstrasse, I HIGHLY recommend it. Also, you HAVE to go eat at the Hofbrauhaus. Don't feel shy there, just sit at any table that has seats available.
If this is going to be your first time going to Neuschwanstein, you may want to invest in a good pair of walking shoes to go up there. It's a pretty steep hike. Or, you can take the carriage (it's five or six euro for the uphill trip, half that for the downhill trip), but it'll let you off at a point where you STILL have to walk uphill a fair distance, or the bus (which is cheaper than the carriage, and lets you off near St Mary's Bridge. There's a BEAUTIFUL view of the castle from there.).
And if it's rainy or gloomy when you go to Dachau, it might freak you out a little. It freaked my husband and I both out.
Also, while you're doing castles, it might be worth checking out the Linderhof. I liked it MUCH better than Neuschwanstein.

Munich has a very good and well-deserved reputation for being tourist friendly and safe. I was there last fall and had no problems. (I'm 32 and female.) That said, I live by the same rules when travelling, no matter where: If you don't go looking for trouble, you probably won't find it. Munich is a great town, and you should be fine-- probably safer than in most major US cities.
On a side note, Neuschwanstein will probably take a whole day, just for transportation time, so you might as well visit the other castle there, Hohenschwangau, as well. It's not as fancy and glitzy as Neuschwanstein, but definetly worth seeing.

I am an American girl in my 20s that spent several days in Munich and had absolutely no problems. Germany itself I felt very comfortable traveling around, however I was careful. I suggest you do the same. Don't stay out too long alone after dark, don't go walking down any dark alleys, and monitor your drinking and you will be fine.
PS Neuschwanstein is touristy but a beautiful castle. Have fun!

Hello,
Munich is probably the safes city not only in Germany but around the world.
You can without any fear walk as a girl alone during anytime of the day or night.
That being said, Munich is not paradise. So watch yourself, take care of your belongings and don't put yourself into any situations that might get out of control.
The usual stuff when traveling....

I loved Munich. It's a great city to visit and has wonderful bike lanes if you enjoying cycling. You will be surprised to find that there is a statue of George Washington there. (You could have knocked me over with a feather.) I found it clean and safe and the people were lovely. I can't tell you about Dachau or the castle as I didn't visit there.

This is probably totally different, but I went to Munich and I'm 13. Here's some stuff to do: Hofbrau house - you get a real german feeling. Beer,, pretzals, and AMAZING SPATZEL
Dachau - you are already planning on doing it, and i just have to say it was really sad, but i think it was osmething that was important for my brother and i to see. it really is hard tyo be there.
Neuschwanstein - iT IS SOO COOL. everything is gorgeous!
the residenz - stunning, gold leafed walls. crystal chandeliers, beautiful oriental rugs, winding gardens. these are a few of the incredible things you will see at the Residenz.
Austria - its a fairly short drive from Munchen, and is great. We went to Salzburg and saw some sound of music stuff, mozart's house, and a really cool fort. Vienna's also supposed to be great!

I am now 30 and have traveled to Munchen alone several times with no problems. It is a very friendly city. Having said that I don't know if I'd go it alone during Oktoberfest. It can get extremely rowdy and I don't like crowds.

Just use common sense and don´t do anything there you wouldn´t do at home. Most German cities are fairly safe, but I still wouldn´t walk the streets alone at 3 in the morning!

If you are smart about how you travel then you will be fine. Just don't put yourself in any uncertain situations...and make sure you have a backup plan if something goes wrong
