I mean come on. The stars and stripes of the north won. If southern pride is linked to the Confederacy then it is still linked to the Antebellem south and slavery and all that is consequential to that time period. You really have to consider then the southern pride means the same as white pride. There's no other explanation for it. Why do Republicans still cater to the racist south?

Gary B....the confederacy sent millions into slavery and murdered thousands of people based on their race. Don't sugar coat this one.

The party that supports this is primarily Republican. They are the old dixiecrats who were the southern white supremecist racists of the democratic party. Strom Thrumond was a democrat and one of the last Dixiecrats and we switched to the Republican party during or right before Nixon came to office. Come on you guys where's your knowledge of history on this.

Wolf... Now, that I can agree with. I really think that when a government building flies that flag, it's still clinging to white southern confederate ideals. And, those ideals included a sense of white supremacy and entitlement to own slaves.

Lets put this in the proper perspective first. The "confederate flag" as most people see it is not the flag of the confederacy. It is the battle flag. Is it a source of southern pride. Sure. Then again so is KFC or southern hospitality. The stars and bars is mistakenly tied to antebellum south and slavery and all that it entails. But your question was is flying the confederate flag synonymous with the Nazi flag. To start with since when is a flag responsible for any actions taken by an individual. A flag is a symbol not a weapon. People will use flags to preach their agenda. Fly the stars and bars because you are southern and still want a separate confederate states. Fly the Nazi flag because you relish in ethnic purity and religiious purity. In reality though, most people don't think anything when they see the confederate battle flag in a car window or outside a trailer. The ones who complain are the ones who attach a stigma to the flag. The ones who feel that the flag represents all that is hateful from their perspective. Lots of people in this world today think the Stars and Stripes represent totalitarian enforced democracy with just a modicrum of colonialism. So go figure. Flags don't make countries or policies.... they just get blamed for them.

No, the Confederate flag is the Confederate battle flag, and those that fought under it were not just White, but also black, and native Americans, therefore how can it be racist?

The Civil war was not about Slavery, the South themselves had been pushing for an end to slavery for many years prior to the war, in fact Virginia petitioned Britain to abolish slavery in the region before America was even independent, whilst Lincolns masterplan didn't involve freeing the last slave until 1910, years after the war.

The Confederate battle flag is a symbol used by people who wish to protect and preserve Southern culture, and the Southern way of life, which is a rich tapestry of things, most of which do not even focus on color, hence the reason thousands of non-Whites fought on the side of the Confederacy.

In fact, in my opinion, the desire to attack a minority group, destroy their culture, and deny them rights, as people wish to do with those expressing Southern pride is very much akin to racism itself, but instead of picking on someone for their skin color it is picking on them for their culture, and geographical location.

The Nazi flag and the Confederate flag are nothing alike. Not even close.

if that's true then musicians such as Hank Williams, Jr., Lynard Skynard and Charlie Daniels would all be racists. And none of them are. And there are some southern rappers today who have Rebel flags on their album covers.

The south isn't racist. Why do liberals cater to the "old white money" of New England? You need to spend more time reading American History and less time listening to Kanye West and Lauryn Hill.

Not at all. The Confederacy seceded from the union and were defeated. The Germans all did fly the swastika and slaughtered the Innocent by the millions. You need to work that brain just a little more it is seriously out of shape.

The civil war had nothing to do with slavery it was caused by teriny by the North. The Confederate states were exercizing their constitutional rights.

Slavery was not ever right but it was the law of the land until after the war already started.

It's technically the Confederate Battle Flag, and is primarily a symbol of southern pride. There are indeed black people that fly it. Apart from that you need to let go of your Republican stereotypes. Check your history books on civil rights and you'll find that the Civil Rights Act was passed because of REPUBLICANS. 80% of Republican house members voted in favor of it, while only 63% of Democratic house members voted for it. In the senate it was 82%R to 68%D. MLK Jr was a registered Republican, and LBJ(Democratic president at the time) signed the bill and declared "we have lost the south for a generation." Much more interesting stuff if you would only look...

You must be young. The south was Democrats territory for well over 100 years (remember your friend Jimmy Carter? The peanut farmer from Georgia?). Lincoln was a Republican, remember?

Only VERY recently has the south become Republican friendly.

And the south has a distinct culture, as we do here in the granola North West. Flying a Confederate flag is just showing pride in the region. Very few southerners would agree with you that the flag has any racial overtones.

EDIT: As far as I'm concerned, the southern states had every right to leave the union if they wanted to. For ANY reason.

I still think that's true. Any state in our country should be free to leave, as are the people within those states free to give up their citizenship.

No. It is illegal to fly the Nazi flag or display the emblems (or at least was until the 1990's). Here in the USA we have freedom of speech ! You can fly the Flag of St George, a Rainbow Flag, or the Nazi flag... all legally.

If you ban the Stars and Bars... you'd also have to ban the Nazi flag, the Klan "uniform", any Black Panther insignia, the Nation of Islam, rap lyrics... along with the already banned prayer, Christmas, and Easter.

The Nazi flag also represents agressive warfare and the mass extermination of millions. I sure can't give kudo's to racism... but the North actually had a poorer record regarding prisoner treatment.

I'm a fiscal-Republican from California who DID spend some Navy time in the south around rednecks and their "opposites" while in the Navy. I was disgusted by BOTH. The NAVY could ban the Stars and Bars... and "black power" t-shirts and we did.

Oh, I'm also an environmentalist who believes in equality.

DO recall that the "racist south" at the time was Democrat.

A Nazi flag is a symbol of the lowest part of the history of a great country. Show off your German history by buying A German car or cuckoo clock. Remember both the South and Germany lost their fight for leadership, That is why we speak English and do are own menial work.

Having lived in the south all my life, I believe that they need to come up with a new flag that looks just like the old flag but has different colors. That way the flag could represent the southern heritage that we are all proud of down here but also say that we don't agree with slavery and what the old flag represented.

no, it is nothing like flying the nazi flag. the south didnt invade others, kill millions of innocent people because of religion or race, or start a war that cost the lives of aprox. 50 million people. i had a nazi flag that was captured in linz germany in may 1945 (which i just donated to a museum) and never openly displayed it. i also have a stars and bars flag which i dont mind displaying, and i am not at all racist and do not believe in racism. it represents history and southern pride to most. not slavery. wship58, good answer
