There's a dress I really want, but it's from a painting. Does anyone know of anywhere that could sew something from just looking at a picture/painting of it?

The best way to find this person is through word of mouth. See if anyone you know knows anyone. Otherwise, you can try craigslist, check your local seamstresses/tailors, local costume shops/fashion designers or students of those trades. I'm warning you though it will be very expensive and a long project- the person making the dress will have to make a pattern to fit you in that particular style, a fitting muslin, AND the final dress. You will have to swatch and pick out the final fabric and have multiple fittings of the dress. But once you have it it will be a couture original!

go to any good fabrics store and ask if they know people who are really great at creative sewing, no they cant make it from looking at a painting, but they might have a way of adding to a normal painting to achieve what you want.

You may have to find a custom dressmaker online to do a basic size for you and then take it to a local tailor to be fitted closer to your shape. Most dressmakers work "by the book" and want to make a few designs they are sure of. I used to think that was horribly narrow minded until I started doing custom dressmaking, and then I saw that most of the customers are just bargain hunters who won't pay for the time it takes to create a design and execute it. I quit doing it. So cut your local dressmaker some slack if they seem un-interested in doing the job. They'll be happy to alter the finished product so that it fits you like a glove.

Just look in your local listings for a custom dress designer. Don't be surprised if they expect to receive a large fee for the original design. I used to receive between $500 - $800 for my original costume designs, and at least that much for the finished product.

Fabric stores usually keep ring folders with business cards for all types of sewing and crafts. My business cards are in several Southeastern MA fabric stores and I do get a lot of inquiries especially for slipcovers and upholstering.. Until they hear the price that is... LOL..
