Is it possible for a MacBookPro to connect with Airport and the base station other places besides home?

I would believe so. If you have a network card either built or with the external card, you can probably access any network that's open and within range of your computer.

All you need to do is select which one you want and bingo, you're on the network and can surf the Internet.
