You should always have 2-3 females to every male. NEVER more males than females. Having too many males they will beat up on the females and can cause her injury when they are breeding.

Always with koi and goldfish 2-3 (or more) females with 1male.

The general rule to any tank is one fish per gallon of water. Also if there is not an aerator in the tank the fish are using up the oxygen in the water and die. The goldfish are rather docile creatures and are not aggressive. As with the ratio it really doesn't matter even a one to one works. But once they do mate you need to get a nursery net or a separate fish tank for the babies otherwise the fish will eat them.

hope this helps

Just as Magicman said, they are happy in any grouping.

Make sure you have a coldwater tank--that means no heater.

It really doesn't matter, they are fine in pretty much any grouping.
