If it is a coin of collector value, it isn't advisable to clean it. If you still want to, soak it in lighter fluid for a couple of hours and very gently wipe it with a soft cloth. Any shine that you put on it will lower the value.
If it's only worth a penny anyway, throw it away and wash your hands...

I heard that soaking them in Coke will make them sparkling like new. I think it has got to do with the acid in it. Apparently some police forces use it to clean off blood stains too. Never tried it though.

if you have access to sulfuric acid, you could dip the penny in that and it will come out like its brand new. but you need to be careful you don't get burned
