Why does the reaction of 1-bromobutane needs to be acidified before addition of the silver nitrate (AgNO3)? Its confusing! i need help!

Because:

AgNO3(aq) + H20 ===> Ag(OH)(s) + H+

...And then you never get to precipitate AgBr.
