This is from a 'cut and paste' exercise and I have two definitions to match up with these two terms which are...
- General expression of a gene, e.g. form of the ripe seed, colour of flowers.
- Alternative forms of a gene at a locus
So which one is trait/characteristic?

Traits are heritable through the genotype. Characteristics are the expression of the genotype into the phenotype; the effects of the environment.

A trait is a personal characteristic, a feature that helps to distinguish a person or thing such as eye-color, skin color and blood-type that are special.

Many of our traits or characteristics are "inherited" or passed down to us from our parents. You may have some traits like your mother, some like your father and some like both your mother and father.

Other characteristics such as the length of your hair, pierced ears, or scars are not passed down to us from our parents. These traits are "acquired" because you were not born with them.
