Everything I have found has said that they live on average 2-3 years, and most of the fish that are in petstores are already a year or so old, so that would most likely put your fish at over 5 years! Yah, I'd say he was a bit on the freakish side, but in a good way :) Mucho kudos to you for being such a great Betta parent!

Given the deplorable conditions that Bettas are kept in many of the chain stores, I think you're probably very lucky to have him survive that long.
Normally betta live to be 2-5 years old, but some betta fish live to be nearly 8 years old. However, when purchasing from a pet store, it is not always possible to know how old the fish is when you take it home.

Mine lived about that in a gallon fish bowl that was changed every week. I think if you were changing his water often and making sure he wasn't over fed, that you can pat yourself on the back. He wasn't a freak of nature, but a lot of people consider fish "disposable" - so they dont care for them in a way the fish deserves.

Store employees don't believe because they are conditioned to think that a betta lives 6 months to a year. So when a customer buys a sick and dying betta, they tell them that its normal for a betta to only lvie a few months.

With most people, bettas live to be around 5 years old. I read a book where a guy had a betta that lived for 10 years, but he said that it was highly unusual.

5 years is about typical for bettas. Plenty make it to 7 years with excellent care and genetics.

Usually 3-4 years, keep in mind you have no idea how old he was when you bought him. Some last longer (obviously), some die sooner- just like almost any other species.
