Depression, alcoholism, mental illness, drug addiction, lack of a decent health care system (It has driven many people to poverty), in some places there really isn't enough work, some people just don't want to work and will take advantage of whatever charity they can (they don't really seem to mind "camping" on the streets.
I have worked with alot of homeless people, and almost always they have had some sort of emotional trauma, typically as children.
Please don't judge them all, some just really don't know how to get out of the rut they are in.
Some are just lazy.

It starts with a lack of opportunity and maybe some laziness or just a lack of motivation. In many cases there is also depression and some kind of substance addiction both of which are caused by the former until the person is living on the borderline and they just give up because they have no self esteem. No one chooses to be homeless no matter what they say. They have no other choice they will end up homeless so they choose to give up before they are thrown out because they want to be in control or because they don't want to feel like a failure. It's weird for someone whose never been there to not think of them as a failure but the human mind does what it can to cope.

Since most Americans do not actually own their homes, I would say that in reality "homelessness" is caused by the weakness of the American dollar and the low wages that Americans are paid for the high amount of hours that they work. Compare America with Europe, where the work week is 30 hours per week. Also consider that in the 50s, Americans could afford homes, food, and clothing based on the husbands salary. The wife could afford to stay home and raise the children. America is in its decline.

The loss of a job without having savings can lead to temporary homelessness. As can just about any major financial loss.

Sometimes, a criminal background can prevent a person from finding employment adequate to pay for housing.

Though I have never been homeless (yet), I have been right to the brink of it and actually thought of choosing to be "homeless" for a period of time in order to get back on my feet financially. If you don't have to pay rent or mortgage, then saving that money is much easier.

Friend, You know the Indian Politics and politicians. The SCAMS are sprouting up one by one ...all Multi crore Scams. some of the persons in High Positions are involved in it.We are reading in news Papers and also seeing the minister resigning and sitting in jail. So when the insiders are INVOLVED , HOW do you expect the Lokpal Bill to Become a law or Ordinance? Never ...Similarly , great persons will be Crying and doing deekshaas .....the thick skinned Govt,, will not mind those , it has so many things to protect. So you may call it JOKEPAL. it is my opinion.

I believe studies have shown mental illness to be a factor in a large number of homeless people, and the misconception that all are just worthless alcoholics is understandable because the mentally ill tend to self medicate and without a strong support system this leaves them vulnerable and left to their own demise.

Most homeless men left the house without their keys after an argument with their wife.

Please go rent the movie, "Fun with Dick and Jane", it tells it all, you will see exactly how a person can go from having the American dream to homeless. Yes, as funny as the movie is, it depicts what happened to people who lost their jobs, their investment money, their pensions, their savings, when the CEO and stock holders robbed everyone working at Enron. I saw the movie like 20 times, it's that good. Stars Jim Carrey and Tia Leone.

not all homless are drunks.
I've got 5 years of street ministry experience (not people pointing and saying "drunks".
Some are drunks
(check statistics and you will be suprised how many are war vets:
the one that risk their necks for our country)
People who had low paying jobs and when they couldn't find another fast enough the were forced on the street.
Young people (sometimes abused) thrown out on the street.
People with mental handicaps.
People who wanted to travel (trains and roads).
many reasons...
