Nationalism obviously unites people... but it does divide us from the bigger picture. When you label things "Patriotic" does this really limit peoples perspectives? I personally think we should be proud of what WE have accomplished as INDIVIDUALS, while acknowledging respect of where we hail from. I think Nationalism all too often blinds us. What's your view?

Patriotism to the ideal of a nation is strength and can and has United nations... however, the individual perception of patriotism can be a slippery slope..
Blind allegiance to a party line is not patriotism ...
the patriot act was not patriotic despite it's title, the inference being that if you don't agree with the Patriot act, you are not a patriot, there in lies the nationalistic banter that Hitler and all the other infamous Despots have used in the past..

That depends on how far an individual wants their interpretation of Nationalism to extend.

I consider myself an American nationalist despite how I feel about our policies or the alignment of all elected officials. I am not about to leave America because of something I disagree with, nor am I about to take a stance and protest in such a way as to put my freedoms at risk.

I don't align myself with any traditional political tangent. My opinion is what it is as a result of my life experience, but nonetheless I am still patriotic and support our way of life.

Nationalism can be described as another level of group-think, which can blind you to alternatives. I understand the need to look "outside the box", but patriotism is also important if you want to survive as a country, and believe in common ideals. America is democratic, and I value democracy above socialistic and tyrannical forms of government. That doesn't spring from nationalism, but from ideology.

Bush's "terrorists" chant is not nationalism. His claiming anyone against the war is against our troops is not nationalism. His illegal, immoral war in Iraq is not nationalism. His destruction of our civil rights is not nationalism. His wiretapping without judicial over-sight is not nationalism. His illegal incarceration of people in Gitmo is not nationalism. His torture of people and killings (Oh, I mean suicides) of them is not nationalism. His arresting and holding people without legal representation is not nationalism. The only people that see these things as nationalism are his blind followers who lack the ability of independent thought. 72% of Americans and 99% of the rest of the world now see Bush for what he is, an evil, war mongering, war profiteer who should be impeached and convicted and removed from office.

No, jingoism is just an old tired talking point. There's not a thing wrong with patriotism.
