And if so do you think Bush will try and escalate the Iraq situation or even start another war with Iran or Korea?

I forget what the exact procedure for this is, but in times when the US is in imminent danger, it is possible for the President to declare martial law for a limited period of time, and the President would then basically become a dictator for a short period of time, and he could very well choose to suspend all elections during that time.

I don't think that Bush could possibly make the US seem to be in so much danger that he could justify declaration of martial law though, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'm sure he would love to declare martial law. After all, he really did say "a dictatorship would be so much easier..."

First, 99.9% of anytime you have to phrase the question starting with "Is it true" it is not.

There is no historical precedence for not having elections during wartime. Our nation is not at war, we are conducting a prolonged attack on the other side of the world--the impact on the US is neglible in terms of the economy, fear of attack, etc. This is far different than when were were involved in WW2, and our entire nation mobilized for the war effort, sent millions of men into battle, and we had to defend our shores from attack by German and Japanese ships, subs and planes. We were directly attacked- Pearl Harbor of course was the worst, but we had minor attacks I believe in San Deigo or thereabouts, and also on the southern atlantic coast. Full fledged battles raged in the Alutian islands.
The Iraq war is nothing compared to when our entire nation was at war. Even when our nation was really at war defending our country, we still had presidential elections.

I believe George W. Bush will very possibly try to retain power by engaging the U.S.A. in 'wars' with Iraq and Iran. At the time of the 2008 election, he could try to invoke martial law, claiming that a change in leadership would be detrimental to the nation's best interests. -RKO- 05/11/07
