Myself, I like working with dificult animals and helping them and accepted the challenge of working with these amazing but definatly challenging animals. Others get them because they love the animal (good reason), or for status or to have a "cool" or "unique" pet (bad reason). I'm of the opinion wild animals are best left wild, but if they can not remain wild for whatever reason there needs to be caring, knowledgable individuals to take care of them.

To all those people who said people only get exotic pets to look "cool" guess what..you're soo wrong! well at least with me anyway...i have a very deep understanding of animals and i would seriously have one of everything in the world if i could...animals give me somthing that people can not...i dont know...a purpose maybe? i am going to school to be a vet tech and i am the type of person who will feed my animals before i feed myself... you really can not understand the personalities of exotic pets like snakes, lizzards, parrots etc...until you actually have one. there is something special about each and every animal and if the right kind of person decides to get an exotic pet then why not? i wouldnt say everyone go get one...but if that peturicular person has the right personality (like i do) do care for and deal with this animal and give it an amazing life then i would say there is nothing better in the world? I would seriously change your question to why do SOME people get pets at all when they just ignore them and abuse them? dogs and cats were "exotic" at one time too

*Because they want a unique pet
*Because they want a challenge
*Because they want to show off (bad reason to get one)
*Maybe for conservation reasons
*Because they love the animal

I have nothing against people keeping exotic pets as long as they have done tons and tons of research and know what they are getting into. And as long as they are making sure their pet has a full and happy life.

rabbits and guinea pigs are considered exotic. i have both. they make great pets. much more intelligent than people give them credit for. sweet nature. cuddle a lot. i also have a dog (nothing exotic about that) they all get along very well. as for people with reptiles, i really don't get it. i've never had one.

People purchase exotic pets so they can brag, as a status symbol, to be like the Jones, on the spur of the moment(impulse), because they saw it on a TV show or movie or to be different.

and some people .. take them in because "people" buy them and dont want them anymore..
they realize they are too much to handle... require more time than they are willing to give.. these people buy on impulses.. not ever thinking about the animal.. only themselves!
I have taken in a few unwanted exotics.. I do not take them in to brag.. or to show them off.. I take them b/c I love them.. I am rescueing them from a life in a tiny cage.... to life in my home.. no cage.

im getting a llama for a guard in my goat herd, they are considered exotic. i love llamas and think they are unique.
they are also good guard animals when they are trained properly.

i think it's ok for someone to have an exotic pet if they have it for the right reasons and give it the care and attention it needs.

Some people do it because they think it looks cool, some people get them to empress their friends, and others buy them and sell them for more money for business. But I personally don't see the need for it. There is already enough stray animals in the streets and many more getting euthanized everyday.

anything that isn't a domesticated cat or dog technically is considered to be an exotic animal. although we have rats that are native to our area my three boys are considered exotic. people get them because they want something other than a cat or dog.

Mostly so they can say they have a this or that. Something out of the norm.
