I can not buy a bigger tank righ now. I have a 5 gallon tank with a betta. a 55 with 1 angelfish, 5 neons, and 5 platies and 1 algae eater. and I have a 20 gallon with 2 african cichlids.
I need to put the 2 african cichilds in the bigger tank but the others in the 55 gallon wont all fit the 20. Could I put 2 neons in with the betta in the 5 gallon and the 1 angel 5 platies and 3 neons in the 20 or would that still be over stocking the 5 gallon and 20 gallon?

With decent filtration your five gallon would be okay with the betta and all the neons - they'd be more comfortable in a school anyway.

The 20 could house the platties, the angel (depending on it's size), and the algae eater (depending on the species and size). The angel will eventually need a larger tank, but when it gets that size, it would also eat the neons. The algae eater may eventually need a larger tank as well.

If you want to put the Cichilids in the 55 tank and keep all your fish, buy a tank divider and split the tank into 1/2. The cichilids get one half of the tank, the platies and algae eater can go into the other half. The angelfish and 5 neons can go in the 20 gallon tank. Does that help?

ok did a little research for you at http://www.peteducation.com and discovered that you can community all these fish.

here is what i would do in ur situation

5 gallon is for the 5 neons (and possible betta)

20 gallon is for the angefish, platies, and algea eater (depending on his size?) by algea eater you mean pleco right?

55 gallon is now home to the cichlids

this is what my temporary fix would be, but you ned to watch them and see how tempers go. also start looking right away for tanks in craigslist.com and other such sites. that is where i fine a lot of my tanks cheap.

the ratio you mentioned will be fine as long as you stay on top of doing your partial water changes. You could very well put all the neons in with the betta in fact you would have happier neons for it just stay on top of maintaining the tanks and you will be fine.

I was always told the rule of thumb is one gallon of water for each inch of fish... so to me, depending on the size of your fish in the 55 gal, they might all squeeze into the 20 until you can get them something bigger, or go with the tank divider.
