I have been dancing for 15 years, and started out in ballet. I would advise you do the same because ballet will teach you the technique that is needed in other forms of dance (jazz, lyrical, maybe even modern). I would start of with a beginners class at a local studio on a weekly basis, and as you progress, try a bit of everything.

A lot depends on your age and how much time you have available. For instance, if you are young, start with dance lessons. The best dancers I have ever danced with are women who learned ballet when they were young.

If you are in junior high school, take whatever dance classes are available locally, including ballet, tap, and jazz. Take a lot of lessons and practice, practice, practice.

If you are an adult and want to learn ballroom, swing, salsa, or Argentine tango, find out who gives the lessons in your area and take some. It is important to have the right kind of shoes for dancing. If you do ballroom, get a good pair of suede soled dance shoes, and for many other kinds of dancing, you should have leather-soled shoes. In most cases, a pair of character shoes will work fine.

Find out about local USA Dance (formerly United States Amateur Ballroom Dance Association) activities in your area. They will give you the opportunity to attend both social functions, meet other dancers, and often have lessons with various instructors. Consult this website: http://www.usabda.org/

Be prepared to dance with different dance partners. You will find that you often will learn something from each good dancer you are with. Remember, you are not in high school, and you don't have to dance with the partner you arrived with. This may cause problems with some couples, but still other couples welcome the opportunity. Social dancing is a "lead and follow" situation. You are dancing with somebody else, and you need to learn the "lead and follow" type of dancing.

Remember that every time you dance, you have the opportunity to learn something new. It is not just the dance and the music, it is also the people you will meet on the dance floor.

first, look up a dance studio in your area. Give them a call, maybe go in and watch a class if it's permitted. Then just decide what you really want to try. Ballet is a good basis. It builds technique for any other kind of dance you want to do. And as long as you love doing it and practice, I'm sure you'll do just fine.

Oh, and just another note. It may be intimidating at first. especially if you have never danced before. Just stick with it. you'll love it, I swear.

First, find a studio that you feel comfortable with. Next, take 'sample' classes, then figure out which ones you may want to take. I would take at least a little ballet, because it gives you skills for every type of dance. But after learning the basics you may want to branch out and and try other types. it's all up to you. good luck!! :-)

Just relax and move with the music. Don't try and do ay difficult dance moves as they will look out of place in a club, just find the timing and go with it! Have fun X
