The stretch..............the pitch? Did you ever get much out of listening to baseball games on the radio?

Frankly, without the visual aspect, I'd just as soon read a book.

I think it all depends on the degree of passion you have for the game. I have a lot more passion for tennis, among other things.

One of my grandfathers had the first radio in his county, and people used to gather on the veranda of his home, under the shade of magnolia trees, to listen to boxing matches and baseball games.

I VERY MUCH prefer either watching a game on television or at the ballpark. I HAVE to see the action, not just listen to it. Being at the ballpark just ADDS to the experience. The atmosphere is UNBELIEVABLE!!! I have a great time even if my team loses!! :-D

Baseball on the radio is a wonderful thing.

The listener gets to exercise his imagination, visualizing the plays. And radio only demands one sense, hearing, and not vision as well. The listener is free to do something else, let the game drone on in the background, and pay attention when the intensity level increases.

Radio announcers back in the day were practically poets. Now, and the tv guys are even worse, they're idiots.

I prefer to listen to games versus watch them on TV. There are some truly talented announcers on the radio. It's an art for the announcer to paint a picture to the listener, so that the listener can visualize the game in his/her head.

I love the way Pat Hughes (Cubs radio guy) calls every home run the same way. The ball can be out of the entire stadium, but he makes it suspenseful, like it may be a home run, but he's not sure until it actually goes over the wall.

There was a magic time in America when portable transistor radios had been invented and night time World Series games had not. I can distinctly remember being in JHS and listening to the 1968 WS . Luckily because of the Beatles we could grow our hair a little longer and disguise the ear piece somewhat.
To this day I still enjoy listening to a game on the radio and if I can I'll watch the WS on TV while listening to the local guys on the radio.

While I grew up when the era of baseball on TV was just hitting its high point, and I do obviously enjoy a baseball game whether its on TV, radio, or in person, there is just something about hearing a game on the radio that you just do not get on TV. Maybe its a better feeling of actually being at the game, or the comfort of finding a game on the radio while making a long lonely drive somewhere.

I am only 27 and love listening to games one the radio. The catch is you have to have someone good. I had the good luck to grow up listening to Ernie Harwell do Tigers games.

The magic of baseball play by play is that the announcer has to paint a picture of all sorts of little things going on. From checking a runner, to the delivery, to a 3 run shot of the bat of the guy who is supposed to those. He has to keep those all interesting and fun.

I'd much rather listen to the game than watch it. Radio broadcasters have to paint the picture with every pitch, with every play. Television broadcasters only have to fill in the visual images. The radio side is much richer, more detailed and generally far more instructive when it comes to situations and sometimes to rules as well.

Some people simply haven't learned how to listen.

I live in Cleveland, and I enjoy listening to the game on the radio almost as much as watching it on TV. Tom Hamilton does play by play so well, there is never dead air. Whenever the tribe hit a homerun or do something exciting, Tom gets ecstatic. The excitement in his voice makes me feel like I am right there watching the game. Listening to the tribe game is very enjoyable if you are on the road.

I have to say it brings back good memories from childhood of summer and riding in the car with the windows rolled down, and being able to escape into the imagination of being at that game watching it, rather than what ever other stuff was going on. It was a treat, everything had to be quiet to be able to hear the radio and have the windows down at the same time. It brought peace for a while. I enjoy it. No one blocks my view that way : )

That probably speaks to you age, son.... I like listening to ball games on the radio, but usually while I'm doing something else that does not permit me to watch TV or go to the game in person... having said that... the announcers' talent and knowledge has a lot to do with enjoying it on the radio, as it does on TV.

Listening to baseball is just as enjoyable for me as watching...as long as the broadcasters do a good job painting the pitcure of what is happening on the field. Brutal radio tandems can make listening to baseball pretty unpleasant. Baseball is an easy sport to visualise in my mind, football on the other hand I have to watch.
