Swan Song, by Robert R. McCammon.
It's a post-nuclear war survivors' story (fantasy-horror, I guess), a little bit like Stephen King's The Stand but way better (and I really liked The Stand). It's not a war story like you said you didn't like, rather what happens to the lives of some interesting people because of a nuclear strike. There was a show on this season called Jericho that has some similarities in theme, though Swan Song is more fantastical and much deeper.
The imagery is beautiful, the characters well-developed, and when I got to the end I just wanted the story to go on. I've read it probably ten times and would read it again. My husband doesn't read much fiction and he liked it a lot.
McCammon is good on the whole, but hard to find. This is by far his best book, though.

If you like fiction and love getting completely absorbed in books I would advise "A great and Terrible Beauty" by Libba Bray and "Rebel Angels" which is the sequel to that. "Twilight" and "New Moon" by Stephenie Meyer. Absolutely Amazing... anything by Sophie Kinsella is also a pretty good read.

C.S. Lewis, The Silver Chair.
It is one of the Narnia Books. (The first one was made into a movie, as you probably know). This one concerns a boy and a girl who are at a really rotten boarding school in England, and they called upon to go to Narnia and fulfill a quest.
Very good book, lots of fun, not terribly long.

I loved Hilary and Jackie, about the famous cello player who at five started the cello and became world famous, and in her early twenty's get MS, it's written by her sister and is so sweet and old fashion, I've read it at least twenty times. It's also very sad. BY: Hillary du Pre` Let me know if you read it, I want to see if you like it as well as I did. P.S. The movie was too short and left out a lot of the story. !!!!!!!!!

In my personal opinion one of the best triologies and children's book (although it certainly can be regarded as an adult book as well) would be Philip Pullman's, His Dark Materials. Lyra will stay with you forever.
