Great Pic by the way. I have a Chocolate point with 26 toes.

All the answers are correct of course, I'll just add my thoughts.

I'd ask you what type of other furniture you have? Wall color, bed covers colors, accents. What designs have you already in mind? What might be your abilities? Do you want it attached to a bed frame, or perhaps floating on the wall at the head of the bed?

Personally I like Rustic, which others have alluded to. I like natural, because my life scheme is set up that way, not formal or frilly, but that may not be what your bedroom environment is like?

You could, for example, pull colors from curtains/drapes, decide a shape, and cover a panel in a fabric matching or coordinating with the window treatments.

You can go from mild to wild depending on the room, your preferences, and desire perhaps to change it after a time.

Example: For a floating headboard, with your tools, you can cut a panel, even paneling/luan. foam pad it, cover it in fabric, and tack it to the head wall. Pleat fabric across a panel, use Rough such as burlaps, or soft such as satin. Minor holes will occur in the wall, but can be easily patched after the fact.

For one attached to the bed frame, you can do something similar, or as others have said, pick something that isn't strictly thought of as a bed head board, IE: the shutter or door suggestion.

For as long as I can remember I've combed beaches, and have wanted to find an ornate, unique piece of large driftwood to mount at the head of a bed.

You can create a shadow box shelf unit and use it for pictures, a clock radio, personal items easy to reach. A panoramic mural above the bed; A nice pattern of fabric like a drape or tapestry? You might look at Junk shops for an old Iron driveway gate, or old fashioned wagon wheels.

It pretty much depends on what you feel invites you, and that you can be comfortable with.

Have have used an old door or you could use a cheap new one. You can paint and upholster it however you like and then drills holes at the bottom to mount to the bed frame.

If you choose to drill holes, be sure they are either near the edges of the door going through the solid frame, or use large washers on the bolts to spread the force out more so the bolts don't pull through the wood.

Get some ply wood. You need to cut it in the shape you want. Get some batting at walmart or any fabric store. Then, pick a fabric. Just put the staple the batting, then iron the fabric. Then, stretch the fabric over the headboard and staple it on the back. Simple and cheap.

Why have a head board at all? It's the cheapest. If your wall doesn't look good, you could create a false headboard that's mounted to the wall.

If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to. Go here https://tr.im/hStSd
Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars.
