I installed a Firewire/IEEE 1394 card on my Windows XP Dell just yesterday. Upon first installing the card, the computer responded just fine, and video transferred normally.

However, I tried using the computer tower with a different monitor today, and when I turn the computer on, the monitor acts as if the tower is off, or idle. The button stays orange, instead of green.

In addition to the monitor not responding, I've found that the tower boots up for a few seconds, shuts off, then boots up as it normally would.

I have checked the wiring time and time again, and have made numerous attempts at booting up the computer. It has had no problems prior to this.

I'm assuming that it's an issue with the card. If it is, what needs to be done to fix it? Or if it is not an issue with the card, what could it be instead?

Also, could it just be because I used it with a different monitor? Someone I know suggested that. It doesn't really make much sense to me, but I thought I would at least ask.

If the computer power button shows yellow, it is receving power but not distributing it properly. Look for the lights (4 diagnostic led's) that code will tell you which subsystem is the culpet. Wanna bet its video? Uninstall the card, Boot to safe mode, then reinstall the drivers. Then boot normal. Then try agai with your third party card

It's most likely the result of the different monitor. You didn't give a lot of info about the monitors that were connected to the computer but the resolution settings may be set too high for the monitor that you switched too. If the old monitor works fine then the new firewire card most likely isn't the problem. Check your screen resolution settings. You may need to boot to safe mode (hit f8 repeatedly on boot) to change settings.

It's just the monitor. Dell computers are very proprietary, and usually don't work well with other monitors. I know from experience that Dell, eMachines, and most of the other big names are really proprietary on their computers.
