A 55 would be too small for tangs when they're adults. A apir of clowns are a good choice, so would a school of green chromis (peaceful). I also like scissortail gobies (peaceful), bangaii cardinalfish (semi-aggressive-peaceful), longnose hawkfish (semi-aggressive - peaceful), and canary blennies (semi-aggressive). These would all stay five inches or so and any could be kept together with the possibly exception of the canary blenny and scissortail goby - these have a similar body shape, so I would say to go with one or the other, but not both.

In a salt water tank, in order to keep the right ph levels and right temperature, you half to have a minimum of 40 gallons. 50 is still pretty small.

It takes a long time to balance and take the right ph and salt levels in your tank. You cannot just set up a salt water tank and put fish in it immediately.

Before you buy fish that can cost hundreds of dollars I would suggest that you buy very inexpensive small blue saltwater fish available at any fish store that carries salt water supplies. They're very inexpensive and are very sensitive to their enviroment. Buy one at a time. When you can keep one of them healthy then add one more fish at a time.

This process should take two to three months. If you don't follow this procedure a year from now you will have lost a lot of money.

Good luck! Have fun, and keep your fishies safe!

I have a 55 gal reef tank. Be careful about Tangs and how many you put in there. They need a lot of swimming room and are aggressive towards each other....50 gallons is small for them. I have a Kole Tang. He is fine bc he likes to graze on algae. You could do 2 false percula and 1 yellow tang....but I recommend that you keep it at that!

I would suggest with clown fish for you. If you are a beginner, then clownfish are the best fish for you. They also have the least water requirement; about 8 gallons for one. So if you have a 50 gallon tank, you can fit about 6 clownfish in there. Hope this helps!
