I certainly think in terms of looks, whites are gorgeous? (only side note) Main point is that history texts are culturally biased. Really because there aren't enough impact of asian or african-american harvard sociologists or historians to make this impact of shifting to a broader-based assessment of contributions. I am asian and I orient myself with caucasian standards because that is the world we live in, here in the united states. I definitely know asians and african americans (and hispanics, etc) are making quite an impact, but it is in the most recent times that the impact has been great. How to make sense of human achievements in terms of race? (If you've got racist or insensitive comments, hold your thoughts) If you have any thoughtful comments, please educate me. I am asian and I am quite aware of asian contributions in especially science and mathematics. But beyond the stereotype, there are influences in the arts, even theatre, definitely movies (asian directors).

Social achievement in the context of race (or gender for that matter) is a function of opportunity and access to the system rather than evidence of any inherent biological superiority or inferiority.

White people, of which I am one, are most definitely NOT superior to any other race. This would be the equivalent of saying someone is superior due to their hair color or height. Nobody of intelligence would take such a comment seriously. Skin tone, the primary characteristic on which "race" is based, has no bearing on anything other than perhaps how likely you are to get sunburned. It simply doesn't matter.

Some white people (and men for that matter) might *think* white/male success is indicative of some type of superiority, but they are confusing institutional social advantages for ability. Is an achievement meaningful if others have been placed at a deliberate disadvantage? For instance, what if we played a game of Monopoly and I started with Park Place, Boardwalk, the utilities, and the railroads? Would my inevitable success mean that I was somehow "better" than you at the game? Of course not. You weren't given a fair chance. There's no way you were going to achieve the same success, although you might be as good or better then me given level footing. Historically, this is much the way race has worked in America. Whites have inherited from generation to generation the institutionalized social benefits that predate slavery.

And, let me add this: Beauty, just like race, is a social construction.

No, they are beneficiaries of more opportunities to achieve, because Caucasians have been the dominant color. But if one looks at the history of cultures that have contributed the greatest achievements, they will find Asians have made the most valuable contributions. They designed, manufactured and used sophisticated weaponry during the many wars conducted against each other. They discovered gunpowder, and used it as a weapon against each other. They designed, built, and used seagoing vessels, they discovered the process for harvesting silk from the cocoon of the silkworm. They wove this wonderful strong natural fiber into beautiful fabrics, rugs, tapestries. They encouraged trade between countries which provided not only the exchange of goods, but the exchange of cultural information which enlarged the number of trade routes . These are just a few of the contributions from the Asians, that were beneficial to expanding trade opportunities by ever increasing culture/countries.

Well, first-no offense, but you need to look past Harvard. Nothing wrong wwith them--but there's a big academic world out there and they are only a small part of it--and despite the PR, DON'T set the trends in most fields--especiallly sociology and history. Try UNC Chapel Hill, Berkeley, UChicago, UCLA, NYU, and about 2 dozen other schools.

As for the "Caucasian" race--which is a social fiction, not a physical category--you should check the history from your own background. Until 1700 CHINA was the technological leader in many areas (excepting only ocean transport and weapons) and had superior agricultural technology until the 19th century. And you can't surpass some South Asian architecture, Japanese art, etc.

Much of the "dominance" of the West stems not from quality but from a collateral effect of military-based domination: the victor writes the history. And leaves out what doesn't suit their purposes.

And a s for "superior"--how do you define that. Sure, there is much that is magnificent about Western art, culture, technology and science. But just in the last century wealso "gave" the world two world wars, Communism, Nazism, the atomic bomb. . .

I don’t believe there is a Caucasian standard, but I do believe in the American standard. Do you consider yourself Asian or an American who happens be of Asian descent? I consider myself an American who just happens to have Asian ancestry. I am an all American - girl next door. We grow up in a society where everyone stereotypes everyone, because of things that happened in the past. All races in America have struggled to be accepted by American standards. A formal education, a good job, a good family, house, car, bank account. The thing is that we can all achieve those goals if we are lucky. The things we have are just luck of the draw. There are American people out there of all races, who have the potential to achieve the American standard of living, but because of environment, such as economics and family, they are unable to achieve their dreams. Unless they have the drive to overcome these obstacles, they will not meet the American standard. As for your comment regarding whites being gorgeous, you need to open your eyes to the beauty of all races. If America was all white, what a boring country it would be. Isn’t it wonderful to see all the different colors and different faces out there? I will be honest with you, when I was younger I was embarrassed to be who I am, but now I embrace it!!!

You are confusing race with culture. While Western (Hellenic) culture has done more to make the world the way it is than any other, this has nothing to do with race.

Race is historical and coincidental. The power of various races within a culture is mainly due to wealth (which is passed down by family, hence race), although some nations do have racially based laws.

By comparing the accomplishments of different races, you are perpetuating racism. Race is just how we look; try to think of people in terms of where they (not their ancestors) come from.

It's best to assume that all groups contribute to the human experience. I can't think of a single group that hasn't.

For example, the concepts of individual liberty and freedom that resulted in the 'Age of Enlightenment' and the founding of the US are loosely based on the customary organizational model provided by the natives of the North American continent. Our standards of personal cleanliness came from these people, also.

I just wish we had adopted their political practice of 'counting coup' also. And their sensitivity and expert management of the environment.
