Maryland is to the north. Virginia to the south. Pennslyvania is close above Maryland. Delaware and New Jersey is within 100 miles.

Maryland is due north and east from DC...and Virginia is across the Potomac River, just SW of DC. West VA is just over an hour-and-half (dep. on traffic LOL) from DC, to the west...and Pennsylvania is about that same distance to the north from DC.

the land that Washington D.C. is on was originally part of Virginia. I don't think you can get closer than that. But Maryland is right there to.
