The Spanish Inquisition was formed by the state to purify Spain after the expulsion of the Muslims. The main focus was not on heresy and the reformation, but to remove the influences of Arabs and especially Jews from Spain. The techniques and practices drew on the Inquisition run by the church to stamp out heresy and fight the reformation but the targets were different.

The Spanish Inquisition began in the 15th Century at a time when people were beginning to question the teachings of the Roman Catholic church. Anyone who did not subscribe fully to all the teachings was subject to punishment, varying from mutilation to death by burning. Anyone convicted was also deprived of all their property.

As the Inquisition became stronger and more fearsome, it fuelled the Reformation even more.
