I set up a 55 gallon saltwater tank about two weeks ago. I had a clownfish and blue damselfish until today when I added another clown and a royal gramma. It seems to be some sort of communication with eachother, but whenever the new fish come into contact with the old ones, they shake vigorously... What is this?!?

If the behavior is only seen when the fish come near one another, it's more likely a show of territoriality. The previous fish have set up their boundaries, and you added two who don't have "their" place. This will most often be seen in fish that look similar, or are from the same family - namely the clowns and damsels.

You can help them sort this out by rearranging the decor so the old territories no longer exist and they all have to establish new "spaces". It's possible, though, that these three will always have issues of rivalry.

It sounds like the Shimmies - it's a sign of disease.

Go to your saltwater provider, have the water tested and discuss the possibilities of what disease it is and what caused it. Then medicate.

I can't say why they'd only do it then - I've never seen this happen before! But that's what it sounds like.

I am not an expert on this but I either think the fishies are communicating using body language or they are just freezing cold.
