I think of you often
and make no outward show
But what it means to lose you
no one will ever know.
You wished no one farewell
not even said good-bye
You were gone before I knew it
and only God knows why......

If tears could build a stairway
And memories were a lane
I'd walk right up to heaven
And bring you home again.

This poem is found on most tombstones

The poem that I have always heard was "If tears were a stairway and memories a lane, I would build a path to heaven and bring you back home again." My grandmother has a beautiful plaque with the saying on it. She was given it when my grandfather passed away on 2001, and she has had it in the living room with his burial flag (he was in the Army).
