In order to stay alive, cells need energy, which comes from the food we eat. However, the cell needs to convert the food energy into ATP (adenosine triphosphate) which is the most common form of energy used in cells. Breaking down glucose (sugar) and making ATP is most efficient in the presence of oxygen. As a result of this process, carbon dioxide is formed. So, the respiratory system is necessary to provide the oxygen and get rid of the carbon dioxide to keep every cell in our bodies alive.
