Originally I was recommended zonealarm, which is a free firewall program. Now I notice that Windows XP comes with its own firewall. Are all firewalls basically the same? Would I be compromising the security of my computer if I uninstalled zonealarm and just used the windows firewall?

Zone Alarm is a popular software firewall, but I find it very annoying to use. Secure yes, but annoying. The Windows Firewall is not as secure in that any replies to traffic that is initiated from your computer is allowed in.

I use Windows Firewall in combination with a (fairly cheap) hardware router that sits between my computers and my cable modem. I haven't had a problem.

You don't want the firewall that comes with Windows XP, because the firewall only protects you from incoming rogue packets. A true firewall will protect you from incoming rogue packets and also prevent personal data from leaving you pc without your permission.

You need to turn off Windows Firewall from the control panel and install what I use the free zonealarm home for personal use. Excellent firewall that give you incoming and outgoing protection with real time updates. Plus any new version that comes out you will be notified automatic, that a new version is available for download. You don't even have to remove the older version. Zone Alarm recommends that you perform a clean install, meaning that you are better of not allowing zonealarm to copy your existing approvals for incoming data.

Start with a clean slate and allow what packets of data you desire to be downloaded to your pc.

Vista has a few downsides of the fence: * Most of the games are no longer be supported by XP unless it does say it on the program's minimum system requirements. * Most of the computers are Vista when built and don't support an XP downgrade * Vista takes up more memory in which you should get a very good laptop for matching your lifestyle. Productivity and basic games (under $1000) or High Definition Games (Over $2000) When I get a Vista computer, I have it built by the OEM manufacturer's site instead as I have a line of credit with them and have the best deal done on it which is the most expensive of course but worth it. The cheapest the computer isn't always that good if you are considering buying high definition games like Crysis to run on it.

zonealarm is more secure with more features (features that are annoying) than windows firewall but im sure you could disable some of those features to stop it :)

btw if you are going to download zonealarm i recommend to disable windows firewall because those two firewalls might conflict with each other

ZoneAlarm is definitely more secure than WinXP's own firewall. I suggest to stick with ZA and disable WinXP's firewall.

Windows firewall isn't very good. Use another. ZoneAlarm is very good.

Just use the windows firewall. Zonealarm is annnoying, anyway. I use Mcaffee's firewall and window's firewall anyway. They are both NOT annoying.
