Hi.

There are 2 good organic/naturally healthy ways of getting rid of slugs -

1. Slug pellets containing no harmful chemicals to other wildlife, and good after rain too: There is 1 supplier of slug pellets, not made from metaldehyde, as other slug pellets are. These new ones are safe for the environment and other animal life.

You canbuy from most good garden centres in the UK.

2. Adding natural predators to your garden, periodically. There are nematodes that live in our wild areas that naturally attack our slugs. By adding a regular top-up : they die-off when there are no slugs, you'll manage to keep them under control more easily and effortlessly for you. There's a link to 1 web supplier, below.

I recommend a strol on a w arm summer evening and pick off any stray slugs and snails - and take them faw away to another natural habitat. They can return from short distance trips!

These are ways to clear slugs from your garden, you can also think about making your garden less attractive to visiting slugs in the 1st place. Good design (remove leaves in autumn/winter, remove cool hiding spots, etc) as well as use of some extra tools, like copper tapes and crushed particles that slugs don't like to walk-over etc.

Good luck! Rob

Both beer traps and snail poison pellets work well. There are still snails breeding so one treatment does not get them all.
You can also go out in the early morning while the ground is damp with dew and physically pick them up and throw them away.

Here is the reality: Snails can live for at least 8 years!!! They lay up to 500 eggs a year -- that's 4,000 snails per every snail you let live in your yard!!!

Sprinkle snail bait around the plants that they like best!!

Go out in the early morning with a plastic bag. Pick off every snail, put it in the bag, tie off the bag and put in the trash!!!

You have to be proactive!! Otherwise they will take over!!

Good Luck!!

you will not get rid of them as the cures you are trying actually attract the slugs and snails to your garden ie beer and pellets contain attractants you need to get rid of them all and go back to nature attract the birds and hedgehogs into your garden these will feast upon snails and slugs it may take a while but will definately work in the long run as the birds come to recognise your garden as a food source so start attracting the birds and hedgehogs into your garden good luck

I tried to be all environmentally friendly and such and go organic with beer and salt and all that. Didn't work for me either. Go to any home or discount store and buy snail and slug bait. It's a flake type product that you shake around your beds. It attracts and poisons the snails and slugs. Works great! But you will have to reapply throughout the season.

I use a old tennis racket, if you are lucky you can get up 4 or 5 gardens. This should take them a few days to get back! Only joking!!

Put copper strips around you plants and gravel under your plant. Finish with watering your plant with a mixture of water, garlic and crush raw onion. This normally works for me!

PS. do not use pellet as birds such as song thushes and blackbirds eat the dead snails and this in turn kills the song birds!!

Had lots of snails and slugs eating my hostas. First if you have a wood burning fireplace or grill, spread the ashes around your yard to keep more from coming in. Next, use the slug and snail bait sparingly. Then, spread coffee grounds, after you brew your coffee, around the plants. And then if all else fails get some diatomacious earth from a pool supply store or spent DE from someones filter and put that around the yard to protect. It will litterally cut them to pieces.

put rows of Deadline around all your plants and around your garden. Stay on top of it. If the stuff starts to wear out, give it another dosage, right away. you will get on top of them eventually.

Also, next year in early spring, put out the pellets regularly. This will kill many of the adults that are having the babies that you are fighting now. This should make it much more managable this time next year.

Make sure there's a way for Hedgehogs to enter your garden and make them an area where they can live, put out small portions of dog or cat food and Hobnobs or digestive biscuits, do not put milk or bread out it makes them poorly, they love plenty of fresh clean water. For more information look on the Hedgehog web site, move fires before lighting them as Hedgehogs may move in and be careful when using strimmers, just be patient they'll come, Ray.
