I just do not get it. Why do they do it? Are they trying to put a front on to other people by saying that they have a good relationship when in fact they do not?

It totally depends on the couple...could be hormones/excitement (e.g. teens starting to date for the first time), comfort (people who've been married a long time), love (the newlyweds walking on a beach, excited to spend the rest of their lives together), doubt (as you said, by "putting on a front to other people by saying that they have a good relationship when in fact they do not"), rebellion (the teen who is dating someone against their parents' will), or safety (for those who are in a relationship with someone who is a klutz and tends to trip a lot, haha!).

No, it's automatic. I love my husband, I always hold hands. And seeing seniors holding hands is wonderful. It's just a nice feeling, we're not doing it to show off.

What worries me is couples walking down the street like they don't even know each other and arguing. That's more of a statement.

Well, for some it's not just a front. I do sometimes think they do that just so the public know they're together. I guess it's been culturally implied for couples to hold hands in public.

I am the other half, of an old married couple. We still hold hands after all these years, because we enjoy doing it. Other peoples relationships are their business not yours. Your question was lame, and your right, YOU just don't get it!

For one most people probably don't do it to make people think otherwise about their realationship. Personally that is the only affection that my wife and myself display in public. We hold hands and we feel happy and in love when we do it. We do it for us. We fight, we love, and we live life. Thats all we can ask for.

They want to show off that they have a great relationship and that they are in love. Or maybe, they don't want other people to try and hit on them.

Its good for the guy to do that so his girl wont feel as if he's imbarresed of her.It makes both of them feel good to show others that they're taken by the one who is holding their hand.

I hold my bf's hand because i love to feel his touch. I like to feel connected to him.

DarkGoth: my parents have been married for 37 years and still hold hands. They are in love, not infatuated.

They probably just want to flaunt that their a couple. I dated a guy for 2 years...it was great! and we hardly ever held hands.
