without being very specific, it sounds like you have a ford, the starter solenoid is mounted on the fenderwell near the front of the car, which is why you hear the noise near the headlight. if this is the case, if you turn the key and you get a series of clicks that rapidly slow down, you do not have enough power in the battery, have the battery and alternator tested. If it is a single click, it is most likely one of two things. either the starter is locking up or not engaging (not unheard of in a rebuilt starter) or a bad solenoid. If you do not own a ford, then please specify the type of car and we can try again.

Starter require a tremendous amount of amperage. 200-300 amps for todays new cars.
Your stereo only draws about 7 amps.
Because starters require SOO much more power, everything else in you car may work just fine and make you believe the battery is OK.
Try getting a jump start first.
Then do the more difficult things progressively.

Well i think you need to take the starter back off, take it back to where you bought it, and have it tested, if you bought it from a place that doesn't test it take it to another parts store. Alot of time the starters that we think are New are nothing more than an a rebuilt or remanufactured old one. and alot of time they get bad one's. if the starter is still good then look into replacing your relays for the starter.

You could check the relays but since you say that you just replaced the starter, You should check to make sure that it is shimmed right. Sometimes if the shims are not JUST right, it will jiggle the starter just enough to make it not line up right.

check the connections and check to see if the solonoid is separate.if it's used it's probably no good.if it's new take it back and get another one.nothing is new,it's rebuilt and usually comes with a guarantee.

If battery is fully charged I would take it back off and have them check it where you bought it. Please say you didn't get it at a aftermarket place
