use the formula
x= (-b + sqrt(sqr(b) - 4*a*c))/(2*a) and
x =(-b - sqrt(sqr(b) - 4*a*c))/(2*a)
to get the values of x that satisfy the equation a*sqr(x) + bx + c =0
plugin the values of a b and c into the above formula to get
x= -12 and x= 18
for your equation a=1, b = -6 and c = 216

x^2 - 6x - 216
You want two factors whose difference is 6. 216/2 = 108, so that won't work. 216/3 = 72; 216/4 = 54; 216/8 = 27; 216/9 = 24, 216/12 = 18...this one works. So factor with 12 and 18.

x^2 - 6x -216
216 potential factors are 2&108, 4&54, 8&27, 24&9, 36&6, 18&12
12-18 = -6
(x+12)(x-18)

use the quadratic formula
a=1,b=-6, c=-216
-(b)+/- root[ b^2-4ac]/2a
-(-6)+/-root[ (-6^2)-4(1)(-216)]/2= 6+/-root[900]/2= [6+-30] /2
= 36/2, 24/2= 18,-12
so x=18,-12 or (x-18)(x+12)=0
Hope this helps!!!
