Illiteracy in the U.S. is becoming a horrible joke. White children and Black children are speaking a language which can only be described as repulsive. Not only can't our children read but their math skills are non-existent. Our public schools have become diploma mills. Adults sue if little John or Jane don't get to graduate with their class thereby fracturing their tender ,fragile, self esteem forever.
The biggest problem now is The problem is not being addressed. It's given lip service, but anyone saying that these kids can't function beyond the level of a 6th grader is automatically labeled a racist. If something is not done, I fear there will be no high tech jobs left in the U.S. because there will not be anyone to fill these positions.
Political Correctness is dragging the country down a pit there may be no escape from unless we act now. Vouchers need to be put in place so parents can get their kids into good schools. Teachers need to be paid on merit, not tenure.
I didn't want to paint such a bleak picture, but as I typed, I couldn't help it. The truth is the truth.

Don't you mean the United States of America? Not American. Ironic that you'd ask about literacy.
However, to answer your question. I suspect that very little is being done about adult literacy. The media does an excellent job of keeping the masses distracted. And I would also say that those in a position to do something don't care because they aren't effected.
The fact is that until MTV decides that something should be done, nobody will. Then MTV will find some celebrity one step away from obscurity to host a telethon and donate a small chunk of it to some organization that helps people.
If your so concerned, why don't you do something about it, start by using spell check when you post questions.

Let me try my best to answer this. Adult illiteracy can occur in two circumstances. One is someone who has not ever gone to school or read anything and spent their entirely life in farm or some job which did not need much education. Another one is you forget to read just watching tv and listening to radio and getting addicted to these things and not interested in researching the things that they hear from these sources.
Adult illiteracy does not have to be not being able to read alone even if they can somehow read and have no sense of the world around them and go and vote just because they think what the politician speak is true then they are illiterate too.

Well first I would like to draw a distinction between illiteracy and functional illiteracy. Illiteracy is the complete lack of ability to read, while functional illiteracy means you can read very basic items like roadsigns but could not read a book. I remember hearing this statement a while ago and I thought it refereed to many American adults are functionally illiterate.
There are two causes for this statistic, public schools and immigration. Public schools are declining in the quality of education they provide due to many reasons, including inability of school administration to fire unqualified teachers, inability to expel students who continually disrupt class, and more classes taught in other languages (mostly Spanish).
Immigration is the other cause, many immigrants who come to the country legally make perfect adjustments to American life including learning English. However almost everyone who comes here illegally would be functionally illiterate in English (remember the statement is measuring literacy in English, many people who can not speak or read English are fluent in their native tongue.)
America is a nation of immigrants so unless a law was ever passed there is no legal reason for immigrants to learn English. However the major thing we would have to do is stop putting writing in different languages, no more instructions in Spanish and English, and no more public school classes taught in other languages. With everything offered in different languages there is no reason for many immigrants to learn English.

Defending your nation from invaders is universally seemed upon as a best brave factor to do. Fighting in your freedom and that of your fellow countrymen females and youngsters is as a rule glorified. When you're speaking approximately an invasion then sure defence is an ethical and for a few a devout responsibility. I do not see wherein you're going with this although. Of path offensive wars are an extra kettle of fish. Oh incidentally, Jihad does now not imply holy warfare (there is not any phrase within the Quran that immediately interprets to holy warfare) in Arabic there are phrases for war similar to Qitaal and Jidaal however none of them imply "Holy War" That is a blatant mis-translation to make Muslims look like warmongers. Jihad approach battle. The battle for justice, the protecting battle and so on. and so on. and it may possibly take many varieties, political, highbrow, media and so on. Warfare is just one facet of it on a countrywide stage if the countrywide protection is threatened and is used as a final hotel (similar to each and every different country on this planet does so)

The biggest cause of illiteracy is the lack of education.
2000 statistics report that 34 million people between the ages of 16 and 24 years of age dropped out of school.
We are raising a generation of dummies and morons.

USA is 99% literate according to the World Health Organization Report 1999. 1% is small for a country of this size.

More recent stats, Sept 2006 from Unesco.

So you ask what they are doing about the 1%? Contact the NAAL National Assessment of Adult Literacy and find out.

Its not actually that bad, although there is some but its mostly imigrant populations.
As far as what is currently being done, the answer is absolutley nothing. Bush has cut billions of dollars of education funding and transfered it to the Pentagon's budget. hope that helps
